Ads Target Key Votes on Climate Bill
On Monday, a broad coalition of coal companies, electric utilities, railroads and manufacturers, dubbed the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, launched a new round of advertisements in local districts targeting 15 Democrats on the House committee.

Focus: Akron research team develops clean coal technology
Dr. Steven Chuang, a professor of chemical and bimolecular engineering, is leading a research project to develop a stronger fuel cell that collects energy from traditional coal-burning plants. He's also working on a solvent that better traps pollutants like carbon dioxide released when coal is burned.

George Will claims Gore has not accounted for new climate change data
George Will, in his column for Newsweek, notes that the subhead to last week’s Newsweek cover story on Al Gore and climate change was “Al Gore’s views on climate change are advancing as rapidly as the phenomenon itself.” Will contends that this was “rather rude because, if true, his views have not advanced for 11 years.” (This is from the Nov. 16 issue of Newsweek.)

DOE Announces Plans For CCS Project In Alabama
E&E News PM reported the Energy Department yesterday announced plans to “build a demonstration project for carbon capture and sequestration technologies at a coal-fired power plant in Alabama.” The DOE said the “partnership will begin capturing and storing CO2 in 2011 and should inject 150,000 tons of it annually into the saline reservoir 9,000 feet underground for at least the project's four-year lifespan.”

Alaska Clean Coal Project Moves Ahead As Agreements Are Signed
The Alaska Journal of Commerce reported that “the boards of the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority and Golden Valley Electric Association of Fairbanks approved minor changes Aug. 24 in an agreement for the electric cooperative to purchase the mothballed 50-megawatt Healy Clean Coal project,” which “signals the commitment of both parties to continue working toward a final sale agreement for the plant, despite the loss of Homer Electric Association as a customer for part of the electricity the plant would produce.”
