ALEXANDRIA, VA - In response to the U.S. Department of Energy's 'Record of Decision,' which will formally clear the way for planning by the FutureGen Alliance, ACCCE's Senior Vice President, Communications, Joe Lucas, has released the following statement:

"Today's announcement of the FutureGen site is an important day for our nation's energy independence future. Once fully operational, FutureGen will help meet the world's growing demand for clean, affordable electricity, fuel our global economy and create more well-paying jobs. It will also be the first commercial scale, fully integrated, carbon capture and sequestration project in the country.

The Department's decision was based on careful consideration of the proposed project's potential environmental impacts, as well as the program goals and objectives. This announcement marks another major milestone in developing a technology-based solution to meet world energy needs. Technology like the FutureGen project will ensure that our nation's abundant coal supply will continue to provide affordable electricity while producing fewer emissions, than ever before. We applaud the many people in the FutureGen Alliance who have brought our nation's vision of energy independence one step closer to a realization."
