ACCCE Statement on Introduction of Kerry-Lieberman Legislation
Alexandria, VA – In response to today’s introduction of new climate change legislation by Senators Kerry and Lieberman, American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) President and CEO Steve Miller released the following statement:
“We recognize the hard work done by Senators Kerry, Lieberman and Graham – and the many senators and stakeholders they conferred with -- in drafting a comprehensive climate bill. We are reviewing the bill, which is different in many respects from past cap-and-trade bills. For that reason, we want to make sure we have a full understanding of the bill and its potential impacts.
“As we review the bill, we will be particularly focused on the legislation’s cost control mechanisms, which we view as critically important to protecting consumers and American jobs.
“Since our inception, ACCCE has been in support of federal legislation that achieves the goals of reducing emissions of carbon dioxide, preserving and creating jobs, growing the economy, providing greater energy security, and keeping electricity affordable for American families and businesses.
“Coal is a critical component of our economy, generating nearly half of our nation’s electricity and keeping electricity affordable for millions of Americans. ACCCE will continue working to ensure that policymakers recognize coal’s importance to our nation’s present and future through the advancement of clean coal technology – including the capture and safe storage of carbon dioxide.”
About ACCCE
The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) is a non-profit, non-partisan partnership of companies involved in producing electricity from coal. Because coal is America’s most abundant energy resource, ACCCE supports energy policies that balance coal’s vital role in meeting our country’s growing need for affordable and reliable electricity with the need to protect the environment. ACCCE also advocates for the development and deployment of advanced clean coal technologies that will produce electricity with near-zero emissions.
