(Statement by ACCCE CEO, Steve Miller)

ALEXANDRIA, VA –“By including $3.4 billion in advanced clean coal technology funding in the stimulus legislation, the President and Congress have sent a strong message that investing in clean coal technologies creates jobs for American workers, promotes energy independence, accelerates advanced technologies for CO2 capture and storage, and protects access to affordable, reliable energy for all Americans.

Specifically, this stimulus package calls for investment and research in carbon sequestration and storage. Economic research that ACCCE recently co-sponsored with our allies in the organized labor community shows that capturing and storing CO2 from U.S. coal-fueled power plants can create seven million “job years” (one person in a job for year). This analysis shows that these are well-paying jobs – or ‘jobs you can raise a family on’ as one representative of labor said.

The investments in the stimulus legislation represent a strong down payment on the next generation of advanced clean coal technologies and moves the country’s energy policy in the right direction. ACCCE continues to look forward to working with the President and the Congress to ensure that we have both the necessary funding for technology and a constructive policy framework to ensure that we are meeting our energy, economic, and environmental goals.”

About ACCCE

The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) is a non-profit, non-partisan partnership of companies involved in producing electricity from coal. Because coal is America’s most abundant energy resource, ACCCE supports energy policies that balance coal’s vital role in meeting our country’s growing need for affordable and reliable electricity with the need to protect the environment. ACCCE also advocates for the development and deployment of advanced clean coal technologies that will produce electricity with near-zero emissions. Headquartered in Alexandria, VA.
