ACCCE Statement Regarding President Obama's Remarks to the United Nations Addressing Climate Change
September 22, 2009
Alexandria, VA – Statement on behalf the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE), in response to President Obama’s address to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon’s climate change conference:
"President Obama’s remarks today regarding climate change to the United Nations are pertinent given the importance and complexity of the climate issue.
"As nations such as India and China continue to grow their energy consumption and economies at a rapid pace, the United States must lead the way in creating and supporting technology that will create cleaner energy, keep costs affordable and protect our environment. Doing so will take a major investment from both the public and private sector and will require consumers to apply conservation to their energy consumption.
“As international negotiations and congressional debate on domestic carbon reduction plan have shown – containing the cost of reducing greenhouse gas emissions is one of the central elements of a sustainable climate policy. ACCCE supports policies that will bring new technologies to the marketplace to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and drive down the cost of those technologies in the U.S. and around the world. Doing so will ensure access to affordable, reliable electricity, and promote greater energy independence here at home through the use of resources like coal.
“Full international cooperation is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, it is necessary for all nations -- including China, India, and other emerging economies -- to accept their shared responsibility.
“We applaud the President for addressing such a complex issue and look forward to working with the Administration and Congress in finding solutions that benefit everyone involved.”
