Are the pieces coming together this month for FutureGen in Mattoon?

One favorable sign is more companies are showing interest in joining FutureGen Alliance, a consortium of utilities with global ties dedicated to building a coal-fueled power plant with advanced coal gasification technology and underground storage of carbon dioxide emissions.

Exelon, the successor to Commonwealth Edison, officially joined the alliance last week. And more companies might be on the way, according to a FutureGen spokesman.

Statements by President Barack Obama have been encouraging for FutureGen proponents. Since the State of the Union address last week, Obama has said finding a cleaner way to use coal is a priority in his energy plans.
