Illinois lawmaker sends green message in book

The Springfield (IL) State-Journal Register reports state Rep. Jay Hoffman, “has a very tangible way of showing off his environmental credentials: he has written a book. ‘Hope from the Heartland: Jobs, Clean Air, Energy Security. A Sustainable Approach,’” published by Lewis & Clark Community College, “pounds home the message -- with plenty of repetition -- that the United States needs a comprehensive energy policy, and that Illinois has the resources to lead the way and create jobs in the process.” Hoffman is “an advocate of clean use of coal -- noting that past federal clean air legislation hurt the Illinois coal industry by making many utilities switch to low-sulfur coal from Western states. He wrote that new coal plants are being built ‘at unprecedented rates in countries such as China, India and Russia.” Hoffman said it is “‘imperative that we develop clean-coal technology to lessen CO2 emissions so they don't do further harm to the environment.’”
